About Hearts

Hearts is a timeless trick-taking card game where success comes from avoiding points instead of collecting them. Compete against three intelligent opponents as you carefully manage your hand, predict every move, and stay away from penalty cards. Every decision matters, making each round a rewarding mix of strategy, skill, and careful planning.

Unlike traditional card games, Hearts challenges you to avoid collecting Heart cards and the dangerous Queen of Spades. Smart passing, precise timing, and reading your opponents are essential if you want to finish with the lowest score and claim victory.

With simple controls, relaxing gameplay, and endless strategic possibilities, Hearts remains one of the most beloved classic card games for players of all experience levels.

How to Play Hearts

Pass Cards Before Each Round

At the beginning of most rounds, choose three cards to pass to another player. Passing rotates between the left, right, across the table, and finally no passing. Selecting which cards to give away can greatly influence your chances of success.

Avoid Penalty Cards

Your main objective is to finish each round with the fewest penalty points. Every Heart card is worth one point, while the Queen of Spades carries a heavy thirteen-point penalty. Carefully decide when to win or lose tricks to keep these cards away from your pile.

Follow the Lead Suit

Whenever another player leads a suit, you must play a card of the same suit whenever possible. If you cannot follow suit, you may discard another card, often creating opportunities to avoid dangerous penalties.

Break Hearts at the Right Time

Hearts cannot be used to start a trick until the suit has been "broken." This happens when a player is forced to play a Heart because they cannot follow the current suit. Knowing when Hearts become available adds another layer of strategy.

Shoot the Moon

If you successfully collect every Heart card along with the Queen of Spades, you activate the famous "Shoot the Moon" strategy. Instead of receiving twenty-six penalty points, all of your opponents receive them while your score remains unchanged.

Tips and Strategies

Watch Every Card

Keep track of which suits have already been played. This helps you predict opponents' hands and avoid collecting unwanted tricks.

Pass High-Risk Cards Early

High Spades and dangerous Hearts can become costly later. Passing them away at the start often reduces your overall risk.

Don't Win Every Trick

Winning tricks is not always beneficial. Sometimes intentionally losing a trick is the smartest way to avoid penalty cards.

Pay Attention to the Queen of Spades

Always know where the Queen of Spades is likely to appear. One careless trick can dramatically increase your score.

Choose the Right Moment to Shoot the Moon

Attempt this risky strategy only when your hand is exceptionally strong. A failed attempt can leave you collecting far more penalty points than expected.

Hearts combines classic card mechanics, thoughtful strategy, and endless replayability into one of the most enjoyable trick-taking games ever created. Whether you're learning the basics or mastering advanced tactics, every hand offers a fresh and rewarding challenge.
